At Last, Decent Halal Steaks for East Lancs!
Slowly but surely there is indeed a halal meat revolution in the UK and fortunately for those of us 'Up North' the list of options for decent grub which isn't confined to the M25 is growing in both quantity and quality.
Those in search for true halal fine dining need look no further than Cona in Bradford whilst those with a carnivorous appetite for fine 28 day aged Aberdeen Angus steaks should head to Rump'n'Ribs in Manchester City Centre.
There are many others of course but carrying on with the steak theme, this blog is dedicated to the latest entrant, MUMU steakhouse, which also offers its diner 28 day aged fillet, t-bone, sirloin and rib eye steaks as well as whole host of other options.
However this latest eatery is not in Manchester, but in Preston of all places and as the Mrs, our youngest and I were passing by we thought it rude not to stop off and see how it measures up?
Rump'n'Ribs being the benchmark I was measuring against.
The answer is, it measures up pretty well, in fact I'd go so far as saying that if you were to do a blind taste test then you would struggle to distinguish between the two.
I opted for the Rib Eye whilst the Mrs went for Sirloin with sides of Roast Potatoes and Parmesan and Truffle topped fries, albeit the Truffle proved to be elusive.
The steaks were cooked well and juicy and the accompanying sauces, Mushroom and Peppercorn, were both deliciously rich and creamy.
As for the venue, it is significantly bigger than Rump'n'Ribs with plenty of streetside parking and for me the open kitchen is a great idea as I like to see the action and take in the aroma as the food is prepared.
So all in all, very good indeed!
But....
The question that the Mrs and I asked ourselves at the end of the meal is whether we'd drive all the way from Manchester again?
The answer is no but that's not a poor reflection on MUMU it's just that for us we can get practically the same meal at Rump'n'Ribs for the same price so why bother driving that distance and that too with 3 kids in tow?
MUMUs should be your first choice if you live in Preston, Blackburn and maybe even Burnley and Nelson but if you're in Manchester and expect to get something different to Rump'n'Ribs at the end of your drive, you won't.
The way to look at it is that finally new steak houses are opening which are raising the bar and increasing choice for us hungry diners and at the end of the day that can only be a good thing given the fake steaks we've had to endure over the years.
